Steel ring or flanging is the sealing surface, the effect of flange is compress them. Thus it can be seen as is blocked by steel rings or flanging, flange is not in contact with the medium. Because the flange can be active, not directly and pipe connection, so called the lap joint flange, there is another term is loose flange.
